The Liberal Democrat Campaign for Manufacturing believes that manufacturing is vital for Britain’s long term economic success. Our aim is that government decisions and initiatives reflect this priority.
The Campaign brings together Liberal Democrats with manufacturers, and provides a forum for ideas and policies that can input directly into government thinking.
The Campaign aims to nurture and support British manufacturing within government, and to contribute towards an expansion in our manufacturing capability.
How we started
From Lancashire to the whole of Britain: how the Campaign started….
It started at the Lib Dem North West Conference in 2009 with a motion on the importance of manufacturing proposed by the then leader of Burnley Council, Gordon Birtwistle. In the following months, Gordon was joined by Chris Davies MEP and William Hobhouse in a series of visits to manufacturing companies in Burnley.
Since the General Election, when Gordon Birtwistle became the MP for Burnley, it has become increasingly clear to many people that manufacturing will be a vital component of a sustainable British economy into the future. The Liberal Democrats in the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills have been at the forefront of this agenda.
The Liberal Democrat Campaign for Manufacturing takes what Liberal Democrats in Lancashire have championed for years, and takes it national.
